How to share files between Windows 8 and Windows 7 in dual boot

Windows 8 Developer Preview is released recently for the benefit of all the people to try out the new features of Windows 8. Lot of people have downloaded Windows 8 Developer Preview. It is estimated that more than 5,00,000 downloads of Windows 8 Developer Preview were there during the first 12 hours after its release.

Earlier I have shown how to dual boot Windows 8 and Windows 7 in the same computer. But if you feel that Windows 7 partition houses all of your files, then this article explains how to get both partitions ( Windows 7 and Windows 8) to use the same Documents folder.

Normally when you dual boot Windows 8, it is possible to still access files on your Windows 7 partition, but you have to manually navigate there every time a open or save dialog box opens up. This is a time consuming task. In order to solve this problem, you can tell Windows 8 to use the Windows 7 user folders - Documents, Downloads, Music, Movies and other folders as Windows 8 folders as well.

I will provide you a simple method to share your Windows 8 and Windows 7 user folders. The benefit is that it will help you to access the favorite videos, pictures, and documents ( like from My Pictures, My Videos or My Documents) in both the operating systems easily without having to creating unnecessary shortcuts or manually navigating through user profile directories.

So we will be moving a Windows 8 default Documents to the Windows 7 user profile folder instead of having a separate default Documents folder for Window s 8. Here is a step by step procedure to do this.

  • go to Windows 8 installation drive path, for e.g, E:\Users\user name\folder.
  • Access the Documents folder's Properties by right-click context menu and go to Location tab. See a screen shot below.
  • Now click on Move option, and select your windows 7 username and click OK
  • Now your Windows 8 will start using your Windows 7's Documents folder as its own Documents folder. Same procedure can be followed for Video, Pictures, and Music folders.
