What’s new in windows 8 Explorer?

The New Windows 8 Developers Preview has Ribbon on the Explorer, This was developed and brought in Microsoft Office 2007, and it was not integrated in Outlook 2007, later in 2010 the Ribbon was integrated in Outlook, New Microsoft has stepped in to next generation Explorer with Ribbon Easy to use and its very use full.

Why did Microsoft add a Ribbon in Explorer?

Microsoft has Researched how people most frequently invoke commands in Explorer, the below graph is the one of the reason why Microsoft added Ribbon in Explorer

This is an example for how frequently we use this commands in Windows Explorer, and this is one of the reason for why did Microsoft add the Ribbon in Explorer, The Home tab is the heart of our new, much more streamlined Explorer experience. The commands that make up 84% of what customers do in Explorer are now all available on this one tab

What are the features and How to use Windows 8 Explorer?

When i saw the ribbon first time, Honestly i din’t like it so I closed the ribbon and used it in normally, When I was working in explorer opening folder and files the tab use get highlighted like same in Office 2007 and 2010, I liked it and I got use to it, it made my work more faster than before,
  • If you don’t like the Ribbon Bar in your explorer, Click arrow Button on left side top of you Explorer directed to upwards or double click on Computer tab or View Tab, This hides your Ribbon Bar from Explorer
 To Bring back the Ribbon Bar in the same way , Click arrow Button on left side top of you Explorer directed to Downwards or double clicks on Computer tab or View Tab, This’ll brings back your Ribbon Bar in Explorer

One of the top requests from more advanced users is for more keyboard shortcuts. All of the existing Windows Explorer shortcuts work in this version of Explorer, but with new windows Explorer approach, all of the approximately 200 commands in the ribbon now have keyboard shortcuts as well.
  • You can use shortcut to make your job still faster than before Open Windows Explorer Press Alt on your keyboard This will show you the hot keys for the command to execute
 Add the command on quick access tool bar which you frequently use, it’s located in left side top of your Explorer
 Open New Window command, opens the another window of same folder
 Open New Window command opens in existing process
 Open New Window in New Process command opens the another window of same folder and in new process
 The below image shows you the two different process with same folder opened
Open Command Prompt: – Dragging a file or shortcut to the Command Prompt window is not supported in this version of Windows. However, if you want to quickly enter the path to a file or shortcut in the Command Prompt window, You can use this option,
 You can even hold shift and right click on folder to open command prompt window this option is available in windows Vista and even in windows 7

 Clear History will clear all the history of your explorer and Recent item list
 Change Folder and search Options shows all favorite places, and if you click on that option it will direct you to Folder Option
 Windows 8 Folder Option You can change the way files and folders function and how items are displayed on your computer by using Folder Option

What are the Commands in Computer Tab, What do they do and How to Use it?
  • Open: – Opens drive or a folder in just one click
  • Properties: – Shows the Properties of Drive, Folder or a file which ever you select
  • Rename: – You can Rename a File Folder or a Drive with Just one Click, no need to right and select Rename and you can use F2 shortcut for Rename file and folder
  • Map Network Drive: – Map a folder as a drive by specifying the network path of the folder
  • Add a Network Location: – This is use add a network for online storage and even you can create a shortcut to your Ftp Site
  • Open Control Panel:- This command will open Control Panel view and manipulate basic system settings and controls
  • Uninstall Or Change a Program: – This opens Programs and features using this You can uninstall programs or to change the program’s configuration
  • System Properties:- Views the basic Information about your Computer

What are the Commands in Computer Tab, What do they do and How to Use it?
  • Navigation Pane: – which provides centralized navigation and easy access to sharing features on left side of Explorer, you can Turn off or Turn on using this command
  • Detail Pane :- Shows you the details of any file, folder or a drive on the left side of your Explorer
 Preview Pane :- When you select any Readable text file of an Image, it will preview on left side of Explorer
 Layout: - you can customize to visual look of folders, files and drive
 Sort By:- Sorts your file folder and Drives By Name, Type Total Size, File System, Comments, Network Location, Percent Full, Ascending or Descending and even you can add more option by selecting Choose Columns…, this option is even in the Right Click
 Group By :- You can Group your files, folders and Drives By Name Type Total Size Free Space, File System, Comments, Network Location, Percent Full, Ascending or Descending and even you can add more option by selecting Choose Columns…, this option is even in the Right Click
 Legacy Toolbars: – this is available only if you have to install Office in your system, Grove Folder synchronization used to sync your files folders to SharePoint
